The relevance of this term differs from nation to nation and embraces degrees such as the Dr. iur., J.S.D., Ph.D., and LL.D. In the United States, the Doctor of Laws refers to an honorary degree. The Doctor of Law degree is recognized as the “most advanced law degree” by Stanford University, New York University, Georgetown Law, and Yale Law School.

Generally, it takes four years to complete Doctor of Law degree. The recipient of this degree enjoys a prestigious status and dignified position. In Europe, New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom, this degree is a higher doctorate, usually rewarded on the basis of outstanding and unique publications that include original and important contributions to the study of law.
